And She Never Flew Kites Again

Life is all about journey and journey is about making memories with friends, family, and yourself. We have few incidents in our life that we can never forget. Below is the story of a 13-year-old girl who loved playing with kites. And that day was the last time she flew kites.

Story of the Last Kite

It was a Diwali vacation. I was in 8th grade. My brother was in 6th grade. We loved making kites and playing with them. We would use sticks from coconut trees to make the structure of kite. Making kites was all easy with some paper, a few coconut sticks, an adhesive and a lot of free time. That day we made 2 kites and took them to the open field in front of our house. But that day wasn’t our lucky day. The air wasn’t helping our kites to go up and fly. So, we decided to take our kites to the terrace. We requested our father for help, so he also joined us.

All three of us were trying hard to get our kites up in the air and soon we were successful. Our kites were competing with birds flying around. My father was helping my younger brother with his kite. I was trying hard alone to get my kite above theirs.

I don’t know what happened in friction of second. But I was hanging from the terrace with my hand tightly holding the edges of terrace. My kite was freely flying in the air. There was no side wall to the terrace of our house back then. We had taken risk to play with kites upstairs with no side wall or Parapets.

“Baba” with every bit of strength remaining in me, I called my father. He came running near the edge. He looked as frightened as I was. Our house was newly constructed one. Below me, on the ground, there were broken stones, unused material from construction. If I had fallen on the ground, I would have banged my head on one of those broken stones.

“Give me your hand” Baba said. I dint think of anything. Just did what he asked. He took both my hands and lifted me up. Finally, I was on terrace surface, standing on my feet, shivering like hell. Both of my hands had started bleeding from scratches.

I came downstairs with some help. Baba applied some medicines over my hand. But I must admit, I was shivering with fear for a good 1 hour. Did not utter a single word.

Needless to say, I never played with kites again. And never went up on terrace for at least a few days.

For a girl like me, who had never been in any accident, who had never ever seen an accident, this was a big deal. It was like going near an accident, touching it, saying “Hi” to it and coming back. All safe and sound.

This story is based on real incident. It tells us about why it’s very important to make sure that children are playing in safe spaces. When you take your child to heights make sure side walls or parapets are in place to avoid accidents. Take as many precautions as you can to keep your kids safe.
