Nothing can upset parents more than seeing their baby fall sick. Fever, common cold or chronic earache – we have been through it. Our hearts ache to see babies fighting with an illness. But how can you make your children strong enough? How can you boost your child’s immunity?
While it’s not possible to completely eliminate the risk of illness, healthy lifestyle practices can significantly improve their overall health and well-being.
Below are the 6 simple ways that can help to boost your child’s immune system.
1.Breast feeding
WHO and UNICEF recommend that children should be initiated breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. Supplemental breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first 2 years of your child’s life.
Breastfeeding plays a major role in the early development of the immune system. Breast milk shares antibodies from the mother with her baby. These antibodies help babies develop a strong immune system and protect them from illnesses.
2. Healthy diet & sufficient water
Provide a well-balanced diet to your children. Their diet should include a variety of colorful fruits & vegetables, whole grains, dairy, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
Avoid processed, sugary & packaged food.
Ensure your child has an adequate amount of water throughout the day.
3. Adequate sleep
Ensure your child gets sufficient sleep according to their age. Restful sleep helps the body regenerate and strengthen the immune system.
• Infants (less than 1 year) should have 14–17 hours (0–3 months of age) or 12–16 hours (4–11 months of age)
of good quality sleep, including naps.
• Children 1–2 years of age should have 11–14 hours of good quality sleep, including naps, with regular sleep and
wake-up times
• Children 3–4 years of age should have 10–13 hours of good quality sleep, which may include a nap, with regular
sleep and wake-up times
You can encourage healthy sleep by limiting screens and maintaining a regular sleep schedule.
4. Physical Activity
Encourage your child to play outdoors.
Exercise & Physical activity helps boost blood circulation and improve immune function thus keeping you heathier.
Outdoor playing can also help your child to get adequate amounts of Vitamin D.
5. Vaccinations
Vaccination is the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves and our children against ill health. Stay up-to-date on recommended vaccinations.
Vaccines protect children from deadly diseases like: Polio, measles, rubella, chickenpox, etc.
Discuss with your pediatrician and follow vaccination schedule for your child.
6. Good Hygiene Practices
Teach your child to follow good hygiene practices like frequently washing of hands, covering mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
Avoid close contact with sick individuals.
